Involve me & I learn.” We learn from experience and through practice most effectively; not everything is taught in the classrooms and on textbooks. The events in our lives allow us to observe the relation between theory and real life, feel the deluge of emotions that ingrain a mental imprint on our memory as partakers of a collective experience.
Maya Angelou also said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” In the same respect, events provide an empirical platform for social activism. Making a positive social impact through events is catalytically effective with a ‘ripple-effect’ that resonates from those who partake of the activities at the events as well as publicity and media.
Events around the world are held on 22 March in conjunction with the United Nations’ (UN) World Water Day to highlight the importance clean water in the environment and on 5 June for the UN’s World Environment Day to raise awareness for environmental issues from marine pollution and global warming to conservation of wildlife and resources.
This first zero-waste event organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore is in line with 2019 being declared Singapore’s ‘Year Towards Zero Waste’, a year-long campaign to raise awareness of waste issues and the circular economy which is the approach to transform waste into resources.
It isn’t uncommon to marry sporting activities with fundraising. In Singapore, Relay Majulah, a 200-runner relay marathon covering 2,000km in 200 hours and commemorating Singapore’s bi-centennial, raised over S$1.6 million for the President’s Challenge and its 67 supported charities, last week. Among the runners are less able-bodied individuals who took up the physical challenge nonetheless; inspiring others with their indomitable spirit to live with zest and champion a good cause for a better community.
In promoting, developing, and raising the standard of Thailand’s Polo towards international standards, the King Power Royal Charity Polo Cup 2019 was held and billed as the UK’s biggest charity polo of the year. The charity polo match, of which King Power Group was one of the main sponsors, raised £1 million for 15 foundations and charitable organisations supported by the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex; HRH Princes William & Harry.
Evidently, community building and social activism for all good causes are best promoted and supported in an experiential environment.
